January Update: The 2023 Edition

Since I'm technically in the game publishing business I should weigh in on Wizard of the Coast's idiotic plan to invalidate the Open Gaming License. The fact that every company out there is rushing out their own license in an effort to capture the free labor that Dungeons and Dragons just lost should tell you everything.

For a game built on fairy tales you'd think someone would have remembered the one about the goose that laid the golden eggs. Because some bean-counter declared the property "under-monetized" they decided to piss away twenty years of goodwill, just as the hobby was exploding and a new movie was about to debut.

Fortunately when all is is said and done there will be a new banner to rally behind, probably from Paizo but it is too early to tell. I'm not sure if it will affect any of my projects though. My output cratered last year and part of that was being unsure what rule system to adopt for some of the more involved settings.

Now that I'm getting back in the writers seat I'm not sure that I'm going to pick a ruleset. My next book, the first in a series I'm going to call Set Dressing, will tackle rules questions by making vague suggestions with an "ask your GM for permission" caveat. We'll see how that works out.
